Program Description:
This class offers a comprehensive exploration of platter turning on the lathe. Students will learn about the platter as a functional utility piece, a work of art, and a wooden canvas ready for further creative embellishment. The class will cover basic mechanics of turning a platter and various design aspects for functional use. While the focus will remain on turning, Matt will also introduce various decorative techniques—such as painting, carving, texturing, and wood burning—that can be applied outside of class to elevate your finished piece.
Learning Objectives:
Students will design and turn multiple platters approximately 8” in diameter
Learn different turning techniques to create your project. This includes shaping the exterior and interior of your platter.
Learn how to properly sand and finish your creations
Learn how to safely, efficiently and effectively use various gouges, skew, scraper and carbide tools
Learn all about a woodturning lathe and what to look for when purchasing your own
Learn how to sharpen woodturning tools
Attendance Requirements: Students must attend all days
