Sanding - done!

Sand, sand, sand. Take a break, drink some coffee and sand some more. With a random orbital sander I'll make one pass over the hull with 120 grit and then go back and do it again with 150 grit. I'll then vacuum everything and go over the entire hull by hand with 150 grit on a soft sanding pad. The last time around by hand will let me look for anything that I missed with the power sander. Getting closer. Sand, sand, sand.

Sanding on the hull and decks is done. I'll start on the wood trim tomorrow which needs some more sanding. I've wiped the outside of the hull with a wet (water) rag and before I start to put finish on the boat I'll wipe everything down with a tack rag, a rag wet with mineral spirits. I'm going to put down a coat or two of an oil based urethane to bring out the color and grain of the wood and then spray a water based finish on everything.

There will be no more boat work today, we're going to Kalamazoo this evening to see Billy Strings. His is an interesting story, do a goole search on him and see what you find.

"Canoe Mike" Thomsen

Michael Thomsen of Tecumseh, Michigan built his first canoe because he wanted a small, easily handled boat to fish from. It turned out so nice he knew he had to build more. “Canoe Mike” has now retired from his day job as an electrician and devotes all his time to building boats and paddles. He makes wooden canoes using the wood strip and fiberglass method. He buys the caned seats and brass hardware for the boats, but hand makes all the other components of the boat. He also makes wooden canoe and kayak paddles.
