The Dave Details

I brought Dave Boat 3 home 10 days ago and haven't done anything with her until yesterday. Life got in the way mostly spending time putting flower beds to rest for the winter and corralling the neighbors leaves which end up in my yard.

My MO on these boats is to put more coats of resin on the hull and decks, getting enough applied to be able to sand the hull smooth without sanding down into the fiberglass cloth.

On the two previous boats I had added extra resin using a cheap throwaway brush. On this hull I spread the resin with a 4" foam roller and I find that I should have been doing this all along. The resin goes on much more smoothly which means less time snding when I get to that part. The resin will be hard enough to sand tomorrow but the dust from the "green" resin is more toxic than it will be in a week or two. Get all the resin on at the start and work on the wood trim while the resin cures.

The detail of the accent stripes shows off Dave's attention to detail, this must have taken a lot of time. The bonus today was when I got a close look at the last in the line of accent points and realized that the trickster Dave had put an eyeball on each side of the boat at the bow. I was also able to find where he had hidden the magnets in the decks and hatches which hold the hatches in place. I'll be going slowly from now on so as not to miss any more "Dave tricks".

"Canoe Mike" Thomsen

Michael Thomsen of Tecumseh, Michigan built his first canoe because he wanted a small, easily handled boat to fish from. It turned out so nice he knew he had to build more. “Canoe Mike” has now retired from his day job as an electrician and devotes all his time to building boats and paddles. He makes wooden canoes using the wood strip and fiberglass method. He buys the caned seats and brass hardware for the boats, but hand makes all the other components of the boat. He also makes wooden canoe and kayak paddles.
