Tuition: $1400

Ages: 16 & Up

Instructor: Grace Ambrose

Instructional Delivery Method(s): In person

Prerequisites: None

Program Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

Program Description:

Stick chairs belong to a long tradition of vernacular furniture. They are functional objects made by ordinary people with a limited number of tools from the materials they had around, whether that be dry lumber, green wood, or found branches. As a result, no two are alike.

Over the course of six days, we will construct comb-back stick chairs that attempt to channel that same spirit, working from a shared starting point that leaves plenty of room for personalization.

We will use a small set of hand tools (with some assists from the bandsaw) to learn the fundamentals of chair construction, including mortise and tenon joinery, seat saddling, and drilling compound angles. On the final day, we will also spend time working with traditional milk paint finishes and wax finishes.

With a maximum of 8 students, you'll receive personalized instruction in a fully equipped shop.

Learning Objectives:

• Explore the origins of Stick Chair design

• Discuss and become familiar with chair joinery

• Discussion and application of traditional finishes, including homemade milk paint

• Students will create a one-of-a-kind stick chair suitable for relaxing, dining, or working at a computer in
