Big News: SBWI + MSU Team Up to Shape the Future of Timber Construction
We’re thrilled to share that the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute (SBWI) is partnering with Michigan State University’s Construction Management program to design the nation’s first non-union Mass Timber workforce curriculum.
This collaboration is a huge step forward for our students, our community, and the future of sustainable building in Michigan. Together, SBWI and MSU are developing a program that connects hands-on craftsmanship with cutting-edge construction technology. We’re training the next generation of builders, designers, and makers to lead in the fast-growing Mass Timber and Timber Framing industries.
What It Means for Our Students and Community
This partnership opens opportunities for SBWI students to learn the skills that will define the future of construction, skills that are in high demand as more architects and builders turn to sustainable, low-carbon materials like mass timber.
It also means more jobs, more innovation, and more reasons for young tradespeople to build their futures right here in Michigan. We couldn’t be prouder to collaborate with one of the nation’s leading universities on a project that reflects our shared values: craftsmanship, sustainability, and career development.
Stay tuned as we design the new Timber Framing & Mass Timber Trade School Program, set to launch at our new campus in Fall 2027.
