Big News: Future SBWI Campus Earns Environmental Verification

The future home of the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute has been officially designated as an Environmentally Verified Forest, Wetlands, and Habitat site through Michigan's Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP).

The Verification recognizes SBWI's commitment to responsible land stewardship as development continues on the institute's 31.5-acre campus in Adrian. To earn the designation, landowners complete a comprehensive environmental assessment and maintain a current forest management plan prepared by a certified forester.

SBWI's long-term management plan includes restoring wetlands, improving pollinator and wildlife habitat, controlling invasive species, and planting approximately 9,000 trees over the next decade.

"Not only does the project pass muster for the program, it meets and exceeds many of the requirements," said Airin Beechler, Conservation Technical Assistance Program Technician for Lenawee County. "The campus is being developed with a deep understanding of the local environment supported by modern conservation practices and technical expertise."

For SBWI President Luke Barnett, the Verification reflects the school's mission to connect craftsmanship with stewardship.

"Our mission is rooted in teaching people to understand and work with natural materials," Barnett said. "As we build the future of SBWI, this Verification demonstrates our commitment to conservation, stewardship, and ensuring that this property remains healthy and productive for generations to come."

The designation comes as work continues on SBWI's Enrollment Growth Project, which will expand the school's capacity from approximately 20 students per year to more than 200 annual graduates over the next two decades. The new campus is scheduled to open in Fall 2027.

Administered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in partnership with local Conservation Districts, MAEAP helps landowners identify and reduce environmental risks while promoting sustainable resource management.

We're grateful for the support of our conservation partners and excited to continue developing a campus that reflects the values of craftsmanship, stewardship, and sustainability.
