This 3-day class will teach you the basics of weaving caned seats as well as how to re-cane an antique chair. Students will start by canning small practice frames. On these frames, students will become familiar with the traditional 6-strand weave pattern. There may be extra time for students to learn other weave patterns as well. After the practice canes are complete, students will re-cane an antique chair, provided by SBWI.
Students will learn about necessary cane caning tools and how to properly use them. Throughout the course of the class, students will become comfortable working with cane, learn how long to soak cane before weaving and how to choose quality cane for weaving. Class will include discussions about where to source caning supplies, chair restoration, caning different shaped seats, and more.
